Dairyless Beginnings

Hello, world! I've decided to start this blog to chronicle the trials and tribulations of avoiding dairy foods. I have recently learned that I am now lactose intolerant and the struggles of keeping lactose out of my food and my life have been immense. I know others out there are struggling with the same issues that I am so I decided to start this blog as a way to vent about my frustrations with being dairyless and share some recipes, recipe-modifications and dairy alternatives for other people out there who are dairy free either by choice or by necessity.

My first topic is about how trying it can be to go out to dinner when you're avoiding dairy. Most restaurants do not have ingredients listed on the menu and some can get persnickety  when you request them. Some simply don't know what all goes into their food ( which is scary in its own right).

I would love to find a place that either lists the ingredients of the food, lists possible allergens in each dish, or maybe has a symbol for vegan/vegetarian/dairy free etc. I know people with food allergies must face similar frustrations when trying to eat out and stay healthy.

Also frustrating is when I make requests for certain items, say cheese, to be left out but it is added in anyway, since many people don't seem to understand that such requests aren't just people being picky, but it's a health request. I  know I could specifically say, "Please leave off the cheese, I'm lactose intolerant." But I don't really want to share that kind of information with a stranger, I don't think it's any of their business.

Today's rant is short, because I haven't really prepared much else. Until next time.

Signing off,
